Although North Carolina leads the nation in growing tobacco, January 2, 2010 restaurants, bars and many lodging establishments in North Carolina became smoke-free zones, thanks to N.C. General Statute 130A-497, otherwise known as North Carolina's Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Law.
While earlier attempts to pass a smoking ban failed the third attempt succeeded and the bill was signed into law by Governor Perdue, May 2009
While this new law has some loopholes, exempting country clubs and cigar bars this is a significant and positive shift for a state where there are over a 250,000 people employed by the tobacco industry.
Go to Smoke Free NC for more information about the law itself, frequently asked questions (FAQS) about the law, educational tools and materials for individuals and businesses as well as links to resources on the health hazards of secondhand smoke and how to quit tobacco.
