Good Cop -- Bad Cop

North Carolina has some of the toughest traffic laws in the country.

For example, if you are convicted of speeding 83 mph in a 65 mph zone, you will find that your license will be suspended in NC and your state as well, if you’re an out-of-state-driver.

I have no problem with tough laws, as long as they apply to everyone equally… I do take issue with being falsely accused. Especially when my accuser is someone who has sworn an oath to uphold the law… Shouldn’t that also include being truthful?

Officer Miranda, No. 227; with the Village of Whispering Pines Police Department has falsely accused me of "Failing to stop at a duly erected stop sign”

Were the charge true, I would have a problem accepting responsibility for my action, or inaction in this instance.

Innocent until proven guilty…

My insurance agent tells me that if I go to court, without representation and the officer who issued the citation shows-up… He Wins! Further... NC cops always show up for court… So much for justice!

My options are…

(1)  Plead guilty and pay the $180 fine, including court costs, and absorb a 25% increase in my insurance premiums for 3 years.

(2)  Hire an attorney and hope he/she can get the case dismissed or charges reduced, adding $100 in costs, but which may keep the charge from being entered into my driving record and thus saving me the rate hike.

With false accusations, back room dealings and lack of transparency in Washington these days, I'm beginning to develop a jaded mindset toward courts, cops and politicians.

Thanks for tolerating my rant… Remember to drive safely and buckle-up!
